LinkedIn hit over 830 million users this year. There's a reason why it is such a popular platform for those who wish to further their career.
As recruiters, you use LinkedIn not only to find candidates and get in front of clients but also to look for career opportunities. You need to show yourself in the best light to get ahead.
In many cases, Linkedin will be the first place someone sees you, and we all know how important first impressions are. So what do you need to do to showcase yourself???
LinkedIn Tips: Profile Creation 101
To optimise your LinkedIn profile, there are several crucial steps to take. Below we will discuss the how and why in taking these steps!
Profile Picture
The first step is choosing your profile picture. It goes without saying that your profile picture needs to look like you, but the most crucial part of a professional picture is that it needs to showcase your face. Distance shots tend to be overlooked, so focus on creating a great headshot. Choose one that's fairly recent - no one wants to feel like they're working with someone just out of nappies. Make sure to also choose a picture that represents you within your professional capacity. The holiday picture of you in sunglasses and swimwear isn't the most appropriate choice (even if you find more people clicking on your profile!).
Background Picture
The second step is choosing a good background picture.. It might be that your current recruitment company has their own banner for you to use to represent the company (and. if they don't, they should!!) But if you aren't currently employed, you can use this banner to show your creativity, passion, and interests. It is the second thing that will attract attention, so choose it wisely; after all, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Use the Headline
Thirdly, utilise the headline! Be creative, and show that you are more than just a job title. There is plenty of space to show your personality, so don't be afraid to think outside the box!
Showcase Yourself
Finally, you must fill out your experience, skills, and "about" section. Use keywords to optimise search results. Start with a hook that will entice the reader to keep reading, and make sure you personalise this section to make it feel authentic.
How to Use LinkedIn Professionally
If you want to take it further, you can optimise your profile by editing your URL. Your URL can be simple, like your first and last name, or add the industry you work in.
You can also add your profile in another language if you are bilingual or multilingual.
In order to connect with other users, you need to become an active member of the community. Start writing, sharing, and engaging with other users in your field, or branch out and make connections with those outside of your industry. You never know where it may lead!
